“Lights in The Sky” London England summer 1976

This is a very old sighting but I thought I should add it to your database because I’m @#$% sure its a good one. Richmond, Surrey (London) summer 1976 – heatwave. Myself and a bunch of squatters were in a disused school playground escaping heat. My hippy friends claimed they had seen UFOs and I was total skeptic so stayed up to debunk. I pointed out meteors, satellites (many, it was perfect heatwave sky with little incident light). I saw a couple of “dull orange ice-hockey pucks” kind of drift over in dead straight lines as if on a rail but thought not much of that except huh? Later, suddenly there was a new dramatic star formation – brighter than stars but that’s all they were – lights in the sky. The whole formation (which it was) moved off and without any kind of acceleration, went clean thru an angle thus changing the formation, The whole thing stopped dead in nothing. After a couple of secs we saw red streaks like shooting stars – the wingers of formation had peeled off at incredible speed – and new “stars” zipped in for another formation. After a second, the whole lot just shot off leaving red streaks on my retina. All silent, all defying inertia. I got all 8 or 9 of us to write detailed diagrams. I lost them when I realised that talking about this incident made me seem mad. I had no idea what we had seen but because there were like 8 of us I realised it wasn’t just me. We all had a strong impression of control and intelligence, like we had seen the cosmic display team. The idea of aliens is still tempting but by occam’s razor, the Fermi paradox (where is everyone) and common sense its probably not little grey men. I just don’t know what it was. People mucking about with lasers in 1976? Temperature inversions? Such a strong impression of intelligence… Today I still see my co-witnesses and ask – wtf did we see? They laugh and say I have no idea but we DID see it. Our “lights in the sky” sighting corresponds with very many other sightings, I now realise. I’m not a believer in anything – eg extraterrestial – I just wonder what is behind these sightings, because I’ve heard of many similar. Yours, in good faith and serious bafflement! p.s. Number of objects was at least 8 probably more – different people saw different parts of sky – I myself saw at least 8. Cant seem to edit the report to say the whole thing lasted around 15-30 secs and there were at least 8 objects probably more because I got everyone to write reports (all now lost) which convinced me 1) it was real 2) different people saw different parts of the sky and there was more going on all at once than any of us individually saw. Something weird happened I dunno what. I was only watching because I was skeptical and had MANY reports of such activity (phenomena?) at the time.

About anomaly

SMiles Lewis has had a lifelong interest in all things anomalous. An early age proclivity at recalling his nightly dreams as well as several personal experiences with ESP, precognition and dream switching bolstered his interest in the paranormal. Shortly after high-school he joined the local MUFON chapter in Austin, Texas. He would later become a MUFON State Section Director for that group as well as leader of the local UFO Experiencer Support and Study Group. A lover of books, SMiles collected over 1000 titles before founding the non-profit Anomaly Archives that serves as the lending library of the Scientific Anomaly Institute (501c3). For over twenty years he has worked with digital audio, video and other bleeding edge internet technologies. He has published his own print journal (E.L.F. Infested Spaces), edited a local paranormal newspaper (Austin Para Times), maintained a large network of websites (ELFIS.net), organized a national UFO conference (NUFOC-38), spoken to anthropologists about UFOs and parapsychology (Encounters with the Fantastic), hosted (and been a guest on) both terrestrial and webradio talk shows and has been podcasting since before the phrase existed. All these efforts and more have led radio talk show host Robert Larson to describe Miles as a “Gonzo Alt-Media Proprietor and Informationalist.” He is also the LOWFI-Texas State Bureau Chief of The League of Western Fortean Intermediatists. SMiles’ current projects include co-hosting PsiOp-Radio with Mack White as part of the many unique shows airing daily on his ANOMALY RADIO Network. He is active with several local non-profits which includes his service on the board of directors for the Institute for Neuroscience And Consciousness Studies (INACS) and the Scientific Anomaly Institute‘s lending library, the Anomaly Archives. His writings can be found within the Archives of his print journal ELFIS and ANOMALY Magazine. In his day job with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission‘s Talking Book Program he manages a Volunteer Recording Studio and audio duplication department and has been a consultant on two digital audio development documents for the Library of Congress‘ National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
