In a crystal clear sky, in bright sunlight I saw an object consisting of a metallic/white long cylinder with a sphere on one end.

I was driving to work on the Mass Pike (I-90) between 8am and 8:30am. Although that day turned out to be overcast and rainy near the coast in Boston, at my current location just west of the I-495 exits it was a crystal clear morning with the sun radiant in the south eastern sky. As I was driving, I noticed what looked like a very large bright star high in the sky north of the highway. I have seen many day time moons. But, I was shocked to see such a bright star in such a bright sky. After some reflection, I assumed that it must be a satellite that was reflecting the bright sun from within the outer reaches of the atmosphere. But, then the shape began to change. I later realized that it must have been rotating. Because, it started to show a “nub” projecting out of on side. At this point it looked like the silhouette of a helicopter with a very thick tail, without being able to see the propellers or the tail fan. But, my “gut” told me that there was no way that a helicopter could be at that altitude or would normally be that big. This moment of uncertainty quickly became both moot and understated. At this point, I viewed the “star” for about a minute. The “helicopter” intermediate view lasted for about 30 seconds. And then, it was clear. I could clearly see an object with distinct features. Based on how high in the sky and my perception of the altitude, it appeared to be very large. It appeared to be white, glistening in the strong morning sun. The object consisted of a long cylinder capped on one end with a sphere with a diameter approximately 2x the diameter of the cylinder. To be certain, it was a clear day. I had lowered my window. I could see the object very clearly. I am not one that expects to see such a thing. I tried to rationalize it as one of the many commonly applied interpretations (weather balloon, military aircraft, optical effect in the atmosphere…etc.). But, it was too clear. I could definitively see the cylinder/sphere construction. Since I was driving on the Mass Pike, I could not just stop to take a picture. I looked up at the object. Look ahead at traffic. Look up. Looked ahead. This continued for over a minute. Then, it was gone. When I looked back ahead toward Boston, I saw another “star” over the city. Then, it was gone. I spent the last few days trying to rationalize an explanation. I have none.

About anomaly

SMiles Lewis has had a lifelong interest in all things anomalous. An early age proclivity at recalling his nightly dreams as well as several personal experiences with ESP, precognition and dream switching bolstered his interest in the paranormal. Shortly after high-school he joined the local MUFON chapter in Austin, Texas. He would later become a MUFON State Section Director for that group as well as leader of the local UFO Experiencer Support and Study Group. A lover of books, SMiles collected over 1000 titles before founding the non-profit Anomaly Archives that serves as the lending library of the Scientific Anomaly Institute (501c3). For over twenty years he has worked with digital audio, video and other bleeding edge internet technologies. He has published his own print journal (E.L.F. Infested Spaces), edited a local paranormal newspaper (Austin Para Times), maintained a large network of websites (, organized a national UFO conference (NUFOC-38), spoken to anthropologists about UFOs and parapsychology (Encounters with the Fantastic), hosted (and been a guest on) both terrestrial and webradio talk shows and has been podcasting since before the phrase existed. All these efforts and more have led radio talk show host Robert Larson to describe Miles as a “Gonzo Alt-Media Proprietor and Informationalist.” He is also the LOWFI-Texas State Bureau Chief of The League of Western Fortean Intermediatists. SMiles’ current projects include co-hosting PsiOp-Radio with Mack White as part of the many unique shows airing daily on his ANOMALY RADIO Network. He is active with several local non-profits which includes his service on the board of directors for the Institute for Neuroscience And Consciousness Studies (INACS) and the Scientific Anomaly Institute‘s lending library, the Anomaly Archives. His writings can be found within the Archives of his print journal ELFIS and ANOMALY Magazine. In his day job with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission‘s Talking Book Program he manages a Volunteer Recording Studio and audio duplication department and has been a consultant on two digital audio development documents for the Library of Congress‘ National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
