Lights in night sky east of Gila Bend

On Friday, January 1,8 as 5 of us were riding together after leaving work heading east along Highway 8 east of Gila Bend, AZ;
the person in the front passenger position noticed 3 white lights in the sky out of the front passenger window that appeared to be traveling at the same speed as us. It was brought to the attention of the rest of us. This was about mile marker 119.
Shortly after, they slowly dimmed and vanished in order. I had decided that they were not traveling at same speed as us, but were rather far off in the sky and just had the appearance of traveling with us. The whole incident lasted less than 30 seconds.
I was in the seat behind the driver, but could clearly see them out the right front passenger window. From my point of view, there were 3 white circular lights, so they would be at 2:00 in plan view and 3:00 in elevation with our car. The lights were big and not quite in a row, a little staggered. From an arms length, they were probably about a 0.25 inch in diameter. I give the sky location in clock reference as I am not sure if highway 8 is due east-west at this point.
We all started giving opinions on what they could have been. All of us have technical educations and occupations. We ruled out any notion of them being flares. Maybe jet after burners, but no noticeable noise. Maybe some sort of night lighting by the border patrol?

Still traveling east on highway 8, at about mile marker 135, trhe person in the rear seat of the SUV noticed the three lights and pointed them to us. The three quickly turned to two. We could see them out the right rear window of the SUV. They appeared to drop behind a row of mountains. We could see their glow behind the mountains until the entire scene was blocked by another mountain as we traveled. That incident probably lasted 10 seconds.

Later we exited onto highway 84 east, and then existed onto highway 347 north towards Maricopa.
At about 7:30 PM, we again noticed two lights out the left side of the SUV. We were just south of Ak-Chin (south of Maricopa).
We pulled over and stopped the vehicle to listen. No sound from the lights. I took two pictures with my cell phone. The driver took a short movie with a cell phone.
These two lights eventually faded also. From an arms length, I would put them at 0.125″ diameter.
In my first picture, light A appears white, while light B is reddish. In the second picture, light A appears reddish and light B white.
The lights were in the SSW part of the sky, and about 30 degrees up from the horizon.
The sky was clear.

I decided to write some notes on my computer as we drove, getting clarification from some of the others in the SUV. I used those notes to help write this report.

We continued on to Phoenix without further incident.

We travel this section of highway 8 occasionally at night. Most often we travel straight from Gila Bend to Maricopa on highway 238. We have on no other occasion seen these lights.

I searched the internet for “lights in Arizona sky January 18, 2013” and came upon your website. So I decided to provide you my report.

About anomaly

SMiles Lewis has had a lifelong interest in all things anomalous. An early age proclivity at recalling his nightly dreams as well as several personal experiences with ESP, precognition and dream switching bolstered his interest in the paranormal. Shortly after high-school he joined the local MUFON chapter in Austin, Texas. He would later become a MUFON State Section Director for that group as well as leader of the local UFO Experiencer Support and Study Group. A lover of books, SMiles collected over 1000 titles before founding the non-profit Anomaly Archives that serves as the lending library of the Scientific Anomaly Institute (501c3). For over twenty years he has worked with digital audio, video and other bleeding edge internet technologies. He has published his own print journal (E.L.F. Infested Spaces), edited a local paranormal newspaper (Austin Para Times), maintained a large network of websites (ELFIS.net), organized a national UFO conference (NUFOC-38), spoken to anthropologists about UFOs and parapsychology (Encounters with the Fantastic), hosted (and been a guest on) both terrestrial and webradio talk shows and has been podcasting since before the phrase existed. All these efforts and more have led radio talk show host Robert Larson to describe Miles as a “Gonzo Alt-Media Proprietor and Informationalist.” He is also the LOWFI-Texas State Bureau Chief of The League of Western Fortean Intermediatists. SMiles’ current projects include co-hosting PsiOp-Radio with Mack White as part of the many unique shows airing daily on his ANOMALY RADIO Network. He is active with several local non-profits which includes his service on the board of directors for the Institute for Neuroscience And Consciousness Studies (INACS) and the Scientific Anomaly Institute‘s lending library, the Anomaly Archives. His writings can be found within the Archives of his print journal ELFIS and ANOMALY Magazine. In his day job with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission‘s Talking Book Program he manages a Volunteer Recording Studio and audio duplication department and has been a consultant on two digital audio development documents for the Library of Congress‘ National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
