My first experience of a UFO.

This event took place 49-years-ago and has remained with me ever since. At the time of the event I was 11-years-old and had recently started secondary school. I cannot recall the exact date of the encounter, though I suspsect it may have been in the Autumn of 1964. It occurred in the early hours of the morning.

Our terraced house ran parallel with a railway embankment, on the other side of which lay a new housing estate. My younger brother and I were asleep in our bunk bed; me sleeping in the upper berth. For some reason I was awoken by multi-colored lights shining through the curtains into the bedroom. I think I may have watched them for a couple of minutes before I climbed down off the bunk to see what was creating the lights. As I was about to open the curtains I heard a scream. Startled, I ran back to the bunk just as the lights went out. Pulling the covers over my head, I must have eventually drifted off to sleep.

The following morning I told my mother about my “dream” over breakfast before heading off to school. When I returned from school my mother began to question me about the dream.

Apparently, she had met a woman whilst out shopping that day who was telling the shopkeeper about a “flying saucer” she had seen hovering low over our terraced houses in the early hours of the morning. She was from the new estate, and had gone out to empty trash into her bin when she saw it and screamed. According to what my mother told me she described it as “saucer-shaped”, with a bank of mutlti-colored, revolving lights at its base. Nothing more was said of the incident.

During the following two or three years I began to suffer from regular nose bleeds. They would usually occur during the night. On one particular night my parents had to call in the doctor because my nose bleed was so severe. Also, during the same time period my father would occassionally find me in the early hours sitting at my open bedroom window. From being a child I was known for sleep walking and so he assumed that I was still experiencing them. On several occassions he would ask me what I was doing and I would tell him that I was waiting for the Moon to come and fetch me. Then he would usher me into bed.

To this day I still wonder if there is a connection to the sighting and the events that followed, and if they are connected to something that happened some 4 years prior to this event.

At the age of 7 I had a terrible nightmare in which I saw a creature looking at me through the open bedroom door. It was tall and spindly with a large head. I couldn’t make out any further details because it was sillhouetted by the staircase light. Also I was sleeping on a matress on the floor because everything had been dismantled and packed away ready for our relocation to a new home the following day. That home turned out to be the one mentioned above.

About anomaly

SMiles Lewis has had a lifelong interest in all things anomalous. An early age proclivity at recalling his nightly dreams as well as several personal experiences with ESP, precognition and dream switching bolstered his interest in the paranormal. Shortly after high-school he joined the local MUFON chapter in Austin, Texas. He would later become a MUFON State Section Director for that group as well as leader of the local UFO Experiencer Support and Study Group. A lover of books, SMiles collected over 1000 titles before founding the non-profit Anomaly Archives that serves as the lending library of the Scientific Anomaly Institute (501c3). For over twenty years he has worked with digital audio, video and other bleeding edge internet technologies. He has published his own print journal (E.L.F. Infested Spaces), edited a local paranormal newspaper (Austin Para Times), maintained a large network of websites (, organized a national UFO conference (NUFOC-38), spoken to anthropologists about UFOs and parapsychology (Encounters with the Fantastic), hosted (and been a guest on) both terrestrial and webradio talk shows and has been podcasting since before the phrase existed. All these efforts and more have led radio talk show host Robert Larson to describe Miles as a “Gonzo Alt-Media Proprietor and Informationalist.” He is also the LOWFI-Texas State Bureau Chief of The League of Western Fortean Intermediatists. SMiles’ current projects include co-hosting PsiOp-Radio with Mack White as part of the many unique shows airing daily on his ANOMALY RADIO Network. He is active with several local non-profits which includes his service on the board of directors for the Institute for Neuroscience And Consciousness Studies (INACS) and the Scientific Anomaly Institute‘s lending library, the Anomaly Archives. His writings can be found within the Archives of his print journal ELFIS and ANOMALY Magazine. In his day job with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission‘s Talking Book Program he manages a Volunteer Recording Studio and audio duplication department and has been a consultant on two digital audio development documents for the Library of Congress‘ National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
