We were on the freeway (I-15) going south to Salt Lake City. It was around 11 am. The sky was sunny and clear with just a few wispy clouds. Ahead in the distance, we noticed an object in the sky through our windshield. At first it looked like it might be a helicopter coming toward us. Then, we realized that it wasn’t, based on the shape and no rotor on top. As we kept trying to see what it was, it was clear that it was nothing we had seen before. At one point it was above our car on the freeway. Looking up, it was black and had a rounded square shape at first, then changed into a stingray shape. It appeared fairly low at the time.
Moving quickly on the freeway and not being able to see it well enough without the danger of getting in an accident, we decided to go to the next off ramp to turn around and go in the direction (north) it appeared to be going. The space between on ramp and off ramp was approximately 4 miles.
We got back on the freeway going north and exited off the Farmington exit. Now, the object was higher in the sky and had somehow moved back to the southeast, against the mountains. We went south on a frontage road and stopped where we could get pictures of the object, now much farther than it was before.
The bottom of it appeared to be black and the top seemed to have a metallic shine to it, as it reflected the sun.
There was little wind that day, definitely not enough to get a kite up. Although, from a distance, this object looked like a giant stingray kite, we know it couldn’t have been, it was just to big for that. It just didn’t operate like a kite or look like it when it was above our car over the freeway.
We got as many pictures as we could until it faded away over the mountain. We thought about chasing it, but it had already disappeared from our sight.
I don’t know if this is related or not, but there were 4 police cars in the area, but seemed to be busy off the side of the freeway. One helicopter in the air and an airplane flew by the object. If anyone were looking out the window to the left of the plane, for sure, they would have gotten a pretty nice view of it. There didn’t seem to be any panic in the air. There were a group of cyclists that rode by, almost oblivious to what we were watching. It seemed like we were the only ones who saw it.
Farmington is approximately 10 miles from Hill Air Force Base.
This object did not seem to have any sudden movements, per se, but did seem to move up and down and far from the time we saw it, to the time we stopped to take pictures of it. (Approximately 10 minutes)
The object made no noise that we could hear. It made no attempt to be hidden from view.
We were definitely excited to see this thing! I just regret that we didn’t get pictures any earlier than we did, because it was really close to us when it was above our car.
